What is a Sleep Disorder?

Sleep problems, including snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, sleep deprivation, and restless legs syndrome, are common. Good sleep is necessary for optimal health and can affect hormone levels, mood and weight. If sleep problems occur frequently and interfere with your daily life, you may have a sleep disorder.

If you have the following, please see your doctor for a referral to see a sleep specialist:

Snoring

Pauses in breathing during sleep

Gasping or choking during sleep

Feeling exhausted after waking during the day

Waking with: a shortness of breath, headache, nausea, nasal congestion, or dry throat

Waking up frequently during the night

Sleeping and low energy throughout the day

The need to take medication or supplements to fall asleep

Light, fragmented sleep

Uncomfortable sensation of the legs while sleeping

Feeling paralyzed or unable to move upon waking

Seeing or hearing things while drowsy and not fully asleep
